Poverty and Homelessness

In our society we have repulsive greedy bankers and a number of overpaid shameless politicians, living alongside poverty stricken homeless people, who are very often born into poverty, giving them a massive disadvantaged start to life.

We need our leaders to be strong, to take action and to show that they care. But maybe I’m being ridiculously naïve when the disparity in our society is so great that the majority of them will never have experienced or been associated with this kind of hardship to begin to understand the degradation or despair suffered.

It’s desperately sad that poverty and homelessness exists anywhere in the world, but in our richly affluent society it’s simply a disgrace.

Nelson Mandela

My first blog has to be a tribute to Nelson Mandela.

I sent the poem to him earlier in the year when we first heard about his illness and just recently received a most unexpected lovely reply from the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

I have struggled for words that do justice to this amazing man’s life. I think messiah is a fitting name for him, because he was a saviour to the people of South Africa and the most iconic figure of forgiveness for all of us to learn from.

I'm sure the majority of us find it incredible to imagine the ability to forgive and move forward after spending 27 years in prison. To gain what should have already existed, EQUALITY.

Surely we will never forget the sacrifices and the unimaginable personal suffering he must have endured, the world is a far better place because of Nelson Mandela.

I tried to tell the story of his life in my poem.
